Programs

PSB offers a full range of recreational and pre-professional dance classes for Moms and Tots, Children, Teens and Adults in the following dance disciplines:

Parent and Tot, Creative Movement

... develops musicality and coordination, and introduces the very basic ballet steps to children 2 to 4 years of age. Parents and Tot Music and Movement classes are now offered for ages 10 months to 3 years.

Classical Ballet

... focuses on teaching ballet to students from 5 years of age to adult in both the Royal Academy of Dance and Cecchetti methods, and prepares students for examinations in both methods.

To be considered for examinations, students must be enrolled in a minimum of two ballet classes of the same level per week.

Intensive Dance

... a rigorous dance program offered to serious dancers who wish to pursue a professional career in dance. Entrance into the intensive dance program is by audition only. Intensive dance students are eligible to audition for the Profile Dance Company. Teaching faculty may identify talented students with potential who will be encouraged to audition at professional dance schools.

Pointe and Repertoire

... a central part of a dancer's training and repertory. Steps from ballet technique are performed on the tips of the toes using hard toed pointe shoes. Pointe demands considerable strength and flexibility in the student's foot, as well as strength in ballet technique. Teaching staff evaluate a student's ability and strength in order to determine if a student is ready for pointe work.

Modern

... a serious theatrical dance form that is distinct from the rigid formalism of classical ballet and the show dancing of the musical comedy or variety stage. Modern dance favors movement deriving from the expression of inner feeling.

Jazz, Hip-Hoph, Tap and Acro

... jazz dance is a smooth, modern Broadway style of dance. Hip hop is a cultural movement; its dance form has taken on a life of its own, derived from four elements: rapping, breakdancing, Djing and graffiti. In tap dance, special shoes with metal taps are worn. The performer taps out lively rhythms and patterns with his or her heels and toes and the dancer becomes a percussive musician! Acro combines modern, jazz and acrobatics movements. This art form improves flexibility, strength, agility and control.

National Folk Dance

... a primitive, tribal or ethnic form of dance performed at a ceremony or festival. Characteristic national dances, country dances, and figure dances are performed in costume to folk tunes.

Musical Theatre

... combines music, song, dance and dialogue. Students learn acting skills and develop their vocal abilities in combination with dance.

Lyrical

... explores self-expression through ballet, jazz and modern technique. Lyrical is danced to modern music, with dance moves that emphasize the lyrics.
