About PSB
PSB Dance Academy was founded by Karen Davies Thomas in 1989. Karen is a graduate of the National Ballet School Teachers Training Program and she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours Degree from York University. She is accredited by the Royal Academy of Dance and the Imperial Society of Dance, Modern and National Dance Branch. Karen is a fellow in the Cecchetti Society and hopes to examine ballet students across the country in the future. In its humble beginnings in 1989, PSB opened its doors to 12 young, aspiring dancers for its first season, and the school has grown to over 400 students. PSB continues to focus on teaching classical ballet in both the Cecchetti and the Royal Academy of Dance styles and offers classes for ages 2 to Adult.
Programs include recreational, pre-professional and competitive, depending on age and ability, in Ballet, National Folk, Modern, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Acro, Tap and Musical Theatre. The school offers intensive dance training for talented students who wish to pursue a professional career in dance, as well as the opportunity to perform with PSB's Profile Dance Company. In September 2010, PSB and Dunbarton High School formed a partnership to offer students who dream of a professional dance career a balanced academic and professional dance training program. Summer dance programs are offered both for intensive and recreational students. PSB takes pride in the quality of dance instruction offered, and students are taught by the finest of highly qualified dance teachers. As a result of the excellent dance training provided at PSB, many of its students are accepted at Canada's most prestigious dance schools: the National Ballet School of Canada, Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Alberta Ballet School and Quinte Ballet School. Through participation in study abroad dance programs, students have been accepted to study full-time at "L'Académie Méditerranéenne de danse" in Marseille, France. PSB is especially proud that several alumni have completed post-secondary degrees and have become certified to teach dance, and are currently teaching at PSB.
